We are the university of the Instituto Cultural Domínico-Americano (ICDA), established as an Institution of Higher Learning by means of Executive Decree Number 389-01 issued on March 20th, 2001.

Bachelor’s Degree in Education with a major in English


Our Bachelor’s Degree in Education with a major in English has been created with the intention to:

  • Train teachers to teach English using modern methods and techniques that emphasize communication
  • Master the key aspects of the language, like grammar, phonetics, vocabulary and syntax
  • Be able to communicate fluently in both oral and written English
  • Appreciate the culture and literature of the English-speaking world

Graduate Profile

Graduates with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education with a major in English will:

  • Uphold the values, attitudes and skills that are in line with the mission of the ICDA
  • Design lesson plans with a constructivist learning criteria, recognizing the student as the subject and center of the educational process
  • Assume a participatory approach to the community and the institution
  • Make students aware of the importance of the environment and its preservation
  • Show self-confidence and emotional stability at all times
  • Uphold an ethical and moral code, displaying tolerance, equality and justice as a way of life
  • Consider their profession to be a dignifying and liberating activity
  • Be willing to adopt developments in the fields of science and technology through a constant search and exposure to new information that permit the personal growth required to perform their duties as teachers
  • Foster patriotic values and peaceful coexistence around the world in every professional endeavor with respect for all nations and cultures
  • Assume the profession of education with a spirit of responsibility, scrutiny, dedication and fairness; as a participatory and creative process of building the foundations of society
  • Analyze critically the concepts, goals and intentions of the Dominican educational system and participate in the collective construction of its curriculum with information that is pertinent to everyday life and innovative ideas that are beneficial to the learning process
  • Understand the unique stages that each student goes through in the learning process, as well as his/her challenges, so as to effectively contribute to his/her integral formation
  • Master their area of expertise with an innovative and unbiased multidisciplinary approach, sustaining a well-rounded sense of world issues and culture
  • Have a strong command of the Spanish language and scientific developments
  • Motivate students to enthusiastically partake in the learning process, share their collective experiences and encourage interaction between the school and community, broadening the exchange of information to benefit the different sectors and areas of the community and country by using any and all available resources
  • Reflect on the wisdom gained from experience and apply it to improve their surroundings
  • Create environments for leadership, make decisions regarding the highly complex situations that arise in education and assume the consequences
  • Plan and organize the elements that are integral to the learning process using the proper means of communication
  • Energize and evaluate the learning process using strategies that encourage students to actively participate
  • Identify, research and experiment with the means and resources provided by the surroundings of everyday activities, so as to promote actions that encourage a constant renewal of the learning process and guarantee its quality
  • Select relevant content, resources and experiences to stimulate and guide students as they acquire knowledge
  • Utilize cutting-edge technology to meet the needs of their specialty and teaching
  • Promote and preserve all the didactic materials used in the educational process
  • Strategically plan and organize the activities and resources used in the educational process
  • Rationally manage and distribute time, space and facility resources
  • Have a strong command of English and a strong foundation in education
  • Be teachers who are capable of holding a class in English at any level and proficient at adjusting a class’s objectives to meet the needs of the students
  • Have superior knowledge regarding the pedagogy of teaching a second language due to their ability to effectively communicate in English

Occupational Field

Graduates who obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in Education with a major in English will be qualified in all levels of the educational system to hold positions in the following areas: preschool, primary, secondary and higher education in both the public and private sectors. They may work in schools and institutes dedicated to teaching English, offer their services as a tutor or choose technical/administrative positions in both the private and public sector of education.
