Requirements and procedures for selection

We are listing below the requirements to apply for a job, as well as the procedures of selection of the candidates who apply for a job at one of our academic units: The Language School, Pre-School, Colegio, or the University (UNICDA).

Requirements:

General Requirements:
• Mastery of the English tongue, (orally and in writing)
• Teaching experience (preferable)
• A commitment to work for one year at least
• Minimal age: Teacher’s aide: 16 years old; Teacher: 18 years old


Academic Requirements:
Language School:
• Training in English as a Foreign Language or Education (Preferable)
• Being available to work on Saturdays (9:00 AM –12m and 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM)


Pre-School/Colegio:
• Bachelor’s degree in Education or related area
• University credits in Education (12)
• University credits in the subject(s) you will be teaching (24)
(Only for high school teachers)

University:
• A bachelor’s degree in education or in the subject you will be teaching
• The professors of the Spanish program are not required to master English

Procedures for Selection

1. Requirements for applying:
The candidate must deposit the following documents: A job application, one (1) photograph, a résumé, Cédula (ID card) or passport (photocopy), a photocopy of the most recent university degree, photocopy of the applicant’s university transcript. The job application can be deposited by fax (809-533-8809), or e-mail (rrhh.dominicoamericano.edu.do) or at the offices of the Human Resources Department (Ave. Abraham Lincoln no. 21)


2. English exam (only for English teachers)
The English exam is given every Wednesday at 2:45 PM. The candidate must be in the Human Resources Department at 2:30 PM. The Human Resources secretary will proctor the candidate during the English exam, and will let him know the results of said exam the following week. You do not need a previous appointment to take the English exam.


3. Pre-Selection Interview (Human Resources)
If the grade on the English exam is 80 or more, the candidate is called in for an interview with the Director of Human Resources. This interview takes place one or two weeks after the exam. If the grade on the English exam is less than 80, the candidate must wait at least one year before applying again.

4. Academic Interview:
One or two weeks after the interview with the Director of Human Resources, if the candidate meets all the requirements, he/she will be convoked for an interview with the Academic Director of the corresponding academic unit.


5. Final selection:
The candidate’s final selection is made by taking into account his/her mastery of English, both oral and written, as well as his/her academic formation, teaching experience, and personality traits.


6. Hiring procedure:

• Additional papers: If the candidate is chosen, before he is officially hired, he must deposit the following documents: A medical certificate, a certificate of good behavior (issued by the Policía Nacional), his university degree (the original, to seal the photocopy), his university transcript (original) and letters of reference (2).

Work contract:
The Secretaría de Trabajo requires that all foreigners sign a written Work Contract. Dominicans are exempt from this requirement.

7. Orientation Meeting:

The new employee must attend an orientation meeting with the Head of the Human Resources Department and with the Academic Director of the corresponding Academic Unit. He will be given his Carnet (ID tag), the Institutional Orientation Handbook, and an Academic Handbook.

8. Training Programs:

The new employee must attend the following training programs:

• Language School: A training course in English as a Foreign Language (EFL), 10 hours of classroom observation, and end-of-cycle in-service training every three months.

• Colegio: If the new employee does not have any credits in education, he/she must register at the university of his/her choice in order to take 12 credits in education.

• University: The new employee must attend the academic in-service training at the end of the cycle.
