Grading policy

The grading policy is as follows:
A – (75 or more) Approved (Passed)
R - (Less than 75) Repeats
I - Incomplete

In order to pass any course, a student must be present 75% of the total teaching time in any one cycle. Students who have met this requirement, who have a midterm grade and a participation grade, but have been unable to take the final exam, will be given the grade of (I) – incomplete. Those students must take the makeup exam. Students must request this exam as soon as possible after the absence. They are given one week to request this test and take it.

Progress Reports (For the Junior Program)

After the midterm, which is usually given the fifth week of class, the parents will receive a progress report about the behavior and performance of their children in class. The parents will be informed of their productivity, discipline, and midterm grade. This report must be returned, duly signed by the parents, and with any comments they may have. These comments will be read and answered by the teacher and by the Junior Program Coordinator.

Makeup exams

Students must take their exams on the established date. Makeup exams are given to students who really need to take these exams because of circumstances beyond their control. Makeup exams are given on set dates, outside of the regular class schedule. These dates are assigned every cycle; deadlines for registration for makeup exams are also established every cycle.  Thedeadlines for requesting makeup exams are also established each cycle.

In order to take makeup exams, both midterms and finals, students must submit the documents the Instituto Cultural Dominico Americano asks of them (a personal letter stating the reason for the absence) to the supervisor no more than five (5) days after the date of the official exam.  It is the student’s responsibility to take note of these dates and to observe them.  A special fee must be paid in order to take a late exam, and the receipt must be presented. In the case of final exams, the makeup exam must be requested as soon as possible.

Exam Conditions for all exams
Students must be on time on exam day, and turn off all their electronic devices (pagers, cell phones, etc.) as long as they are in the classroom.  As soon as they finish the exam, they must go over it and hand it in to the teacher, and leave the classroom as soon as they have handed it in.  They are to keep silence as long as they are in the room, and leave in silence and order.  This includes makeup exams and level exams.

Dress Code

In order for us to attain our educational objectives, and for safety’s sake, students must observe a dress code; therefore, the following items cannot be worn on campus: extremely low-cut or revealing blouses, very tight pants, skirts that are too short, or any other attire that might not be suitable in a classroom situation.  You will find below a more complete list of items and activities that are not allowed on campus:
  1. Wearing caps and dark glasses;
  2. Shorts, Bermudas, and miniskirts;
  3. Transparent clothing, strapless tops, tops with transparent shoulder straps that show the naked midriff or back, as already mentioned;
  4. Exceedingly tight and/or extravagant clothing;
  5. Unconventional hairdos and/or haircuts;
  6. Ornaments and accessories that violate the school norms, such as piercing in different parts of the body;
  7. Wearing thongs or other kinds of extremely casual sandals;
  8. Food, drink, and/or chewing gum;
  9. The use of cell phones or other kinds of electronic devices in the classrooms, as well as charging cell phones in the classroom;
  10. Bearing arms or any other kind of device that may put at risk the safety of the student body and of the teaching personnel.
The ICDA reserves the right not to admit into class students who do not comply with these requirements and who in the eyes of the Institution are not appropriately dressed for the classroom; at the same time, it  expresses its appreciation for your compliance with these norms, so that we can continue offering you our educational services.  The security guards will not allow into the classroom any students who are inadequately dressed.

Graduations

The ICDA has two graduations per year, one in March and the other in September. Students from the Juniors’ and Adults’ programs can graduate upon completing the basic and the advanced programs. However, a student who enters the Institute by level exam and is placed in a level 6 or higher cannot graduate from the Basic program, since one of the graduation requirements is having completed eight (8) levels at the Institute. He must, therefore, graduate from the Advanced program.

The ICDA reserves the right to issue diplomas only during only two years after the end of the corresponding program. Students who request letters certifying that they have studied here or completed programs here must do so within the five years that follow the date at which they finish studying at the ICDA. After these five years, the student must take a level exam and study here for at least one level in order to obtain these documents.
