MULTICULTURAL   FAIR

 

The topics chosen for the 2005 Multi-cultural fair stem from the desire to create understanding of the history, culture and the value system of these countries, and of the importance of world peace.   Students investigated the country’s geography, culture, and historical aspects. Also focused were the attitudes and points of conflict between neighboring nations. Students wore the national dress and prepared skits in representation of traditions and values.

 

 

The Multi-Cultural day was spent in one of diverse scenarios focused at different grade levels. These were: 

Ø      Inauguration of exhibit

Ø      Mural of Peace 1st to 3rd grade

Ø      Parade 4th – 12th and

Ø      Parade for Pre -school

Ø      Traditional Dress display from all countries investigated 4th – 6th

Ø      Auditorium for 6th – 12th grade: 

§         Power points presentations

§         Skits

§         Traditional Dress display from all countries investigated 

§         An Indian dance

 

The students prepared the following:

1st – 2nd Grade:  Walls with their drawings of peace and respect

 

 

 

The inauguration ceremony was held on Wednesday, October 12 and was accompanied by students dressed up in the traditional costumes of the country they selected for the fair. 

 

         

 

The exhibit was held in the school lobby between buildings ‘B’ and ‘E’

 

Also focused were the attitudes and points of conflict between neighboring nations. Here we have India and Pakistan, side by side and North and South Korea.

 

Staff and parents enjoyed the parade in spite of the weather that day.

4th:       Dominican Republic

The 4th grade were very proud to represent the Dominican Republic in both their ‘Sociales’ and Social Studies class.  Several shared on their personal experience in the geography and historical aspects of the Dominican Republic.

Several Dominican girls dressed up in the native skirts for the exhibit.                

 

Haiti was a neighbor of Dominican Republic on the exhibit’s table.

 

United States’ exhibit displaying charts, flags and coins.   

                                            Students dressed up as cowboys and native American Indians.

 

Spain’s flag was presented in the parade along with young girls wearing their traditional dress.

5th :      Central America – Costa Rica

Below we see the 5th graders participating in the parade and the students’ display of Costa Rica with geographical region, economy, and human – environment interaction.

Central America – Nicaragua

 
The exhibit from Nicaragua had their flag, charts with geographical information and a dish of one of their typical food, ‘Arroz con chicharrón y repollo’.

4th Honduras

Honduras’ exhibit with relevant information and in the parade the students with Honduras flag.

 
 


 

6th Palestine, Egypt and Iraq

Sixth graders in the parade were representing Iraq and Egypt. The some students used the colors of the flag on their faces.  

         

 

7th      

The Chinese classmates shared with their friends their traditions, folklore and history.

Southeast Asia - China

 

 

 

 

 

 

Southeast Asia – Taiwan

This group visited the Taiwanese Embassy in the Dominican Republic to acquire first hand information for the exhibit, the dress and Taiwanese’s folklore.

 

 

8th

India

The group investigated the geographical and folklore of India. They constructed a model of India’s building and dressed up in their traditional dress.

 

 

 

 

Indian Dance was presented in the Auditorium by the 8th graders.

 

 

Pakistan – neighboring country of India

Pakistan traditional wedding dress on display.

Geographical information was displayed and this included charts on region, location, resources, population, land formation and the economy. 

 

The power point presentation showed the effects of the recent earthquakes. As an act of solidarity and respect, during one of the morning flag ceremonies, a minute of silence was observed for the millions that die in the earthquake.

9th Grade

South and North Korea exhibit was side by side. Customs, flags, ceramics and Students presented in the parade and amphitheater Korea’s native dress.

 

 

The manner of dress of a man and a woman from Afghanistan was on display.

 

Afghanistan’s flag in the parade and students dressed to the occasion.

 

Scenes from the skit

‘The penalty for a woman unveiling in public is stoning.” From the study on the custom in Afghanistan, scenes were dramatized of how women must veil and how not veiling can affect them.
