We are the university of the Instituto Cultural Domínico-Americano (ICDA), established as an Institution of Higher Learning by means of Executive Decree Number 389-01 issued on March 20th, 2001.
 

Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science

Objectives

The ICDA prides itself on offering one of the most innovative educations available in higher education due to its emphasis on using English as the language of instruction.  In summary, the objectives of the computer science program at the Dominican American University are:

• To contribute to the development of the country and its business sector by training technicians and professionals in the field of computer science, while providing them with the technological tools required to successfully meet the demands of today’s world
• To design and implement strategies that create reliable information systems using the most appropriate software to meet the needs of users
• To instill the highest moral and ethical values in our graduates, such as trustworthiness, honesty and respect for themselves as social beings, as well as respect for the environment and its natural resources
• To prepare graduates to maximize their effectiveness and efficiency as they practice their vocation in any professional scenario
• To instill the spirit of scientific research in our graduates, so as to augment their self learning and incursion into new environments with opportunities to share their newly acquired expertise in modern techniques and tools
• To develop innovative professionals trained in finding solutions to new and complex challenges that require creativity, imagination and timely responses for implementation
• To train professionals who are flexible and who can adjust to the demands of a business environment required by a career that is constantly changing and cutting edge
• To instill a global and multicultural state of mind in our graduates that allows them to adapt, be tolerant and successfully enter business and work environments shared by people with different cultures, ideologies and interests
• T o train professionals to work in teams to find synergetic solutions to problems where the sum of a team’s work is maximized to improve productivity, taking into account the factors of quality, cost and time
• To form professionals who understand the importance of punctuality, i.e. the value of delivering products and services on time, and who take responsibility for effectively organizing their priorities in a fair manner
• To train professionals to develop quality software according to the latest methods of software engineering and standards adopted by the industry
• Provide students with the latest knowledge in the area of electronic communication, so that they might compete successfully after graduation

 

GRADUATE PROFILE

Apart from the characteristics of an Associate’s Degree in Computer Science, graduates with a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science will possess the following knowledge, skills and competencies:

• Command of the packages and tools related to software engineering for the development and design of systems to support decision-making or transactions made in accordance with a company’s standards of quality
• A general and humanistic training that allows graduates to keep themselves informed about new advances in the field and compete as they apply for jobs in the field
• Manage and direct the operations of a computer center in order to assure the continuity of business and the efficiency of all user-oriented services offered to customers under the premise that information should always be available
• Command of written and spoken English with the level of fluency required to be successful in the daily operations of any professional environment, whether in-country or abroad
• The ability to design, plan and manage corporate databases involving large amounts of data and varying degrees of complexity, such as those that are typical of corporate environments where smart business decisions need to be made
• The ability to design, configure and manage networks, including the planning of security arrangements and performance for diverse platforms, protocols, software and devices
• The ability to analyze, design and develop complex software applications using the best standards and methodologies for business–oriented usage or service-oriented usage, as much for the traditional office setting as for the intranet or internet, with security features, flexibility, robustness and quality
• Management skills for effective communication, human capital development and synergy in group work and under pressure
• Visionary insight into how to structure and align strategic, technological plans that support the established guidelines of an organization
• Strong inclinations towards research, giving priority to research that has to do with technological innovations
• Understanding of how to ensure strategic IT business planning, while respecting the mission, vision, policies and procedures of an organization
• The ability to plan and manage IT projects, making proper use of the best practices and methodologies in the industry.
• The moral/ethical behavior, emotional intelligence and discretion needed to fulfill ones professional duties
• Awareness and concern about issues related to the preservation of society and the environment
• A critical and creative mind focused on the innovation and entrepreneurship of visionary projects that are well-suited to the ever-changing landscape of the 21st century, with emphasis on productivity, competitiveness and profitability under a scheme of R & D

 

OCCUPATIONAL FIELD


UNICDA graduates with a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science will be able to work in private or public companies and institutions.  Some common positions are:

• Director of a Computer Center or IT Department
• IT Program Coordinator at a school or university (with proper training in education)
• Director of a Center for Database Management and Telecommunications
• Consultant / Advisor in the area of Information Technology
• Director of Department for IT and Network Support
• Director of Software Development
• Director of Information Technology and Communication Systems
• Engineer and Director of Software Design
• Information Systems Auditor
